Your crystal shop checklist, item by item
Q: What do I need to get a crystal shop up and running legally?
A: This is the list that goes with a crystal shop. It is the paperwork a business like yours commonly meets, and we sort out which pieces are yours.
1. Business license: A business license for a crystal shop MAY ask what stones, jewelry and gift items you sell, whether you sell at markets or online, and how stock is stored.
2. Home occupation permit: A home occupation permit MAY apply when stones and shipping supplies are kept at home, usually with limits on customers visiting, deliveries and boxes left outside.
3. Sales tax permit: A sales tax permit MAY be needed because crystals, jewelry and gifts are taxable goods, and a resale certificate lets you buy by the pound from wholesalers.
4. Market vendor registration: Selling at fairs and metaphysical expos may require a vendor registration for each event.
5. Supplier invoices: Wholesale invoices for stones and jewelry may be requested to support a resale certificate.
6. Stock storage note: A short statement of where inventory is kept and shipped from may accompany a home application.
7. Employer registration: Hiring changes the list: an employer account, payroll tax setup and workers' compensation insurance MAY join the pile before the first paycheck.
8. Company papers: Name registration, LLC formation and a tax ID number are the three companions most owners add; we prepare each of them on this site.
Need two licenses? Pay our service fee once. Order the business license and, if a home occupation permit or another license is also required, we obtain both under that single service fee. The govt's own annual tax and application fees are separate and are not included; finding and filling out the applications is what we do.
Why it is worth the paperwork
Gifts, collections and home decor all use stones, so customers keep returning to find a favorite.
Picture it
Cuthbert labeled forty bags of quartz at the kitchen table for Opal Orchard Gems and cheered at the permit's arrival.
A cautionary example
A heavy geode falls from a display and injures a shopper, and without an LLC the claim could reach your home.
Codes and counts
Business code (NAICS): 453220 (Gift, Novelty, and Souvenir Stores), 459420 under the 2022 update. This page lists 8 paperwork items for a crystal shop, and each one is marked as something you MAY need, since we confirm which apply.
Tip: Describe stones honestly, using words like 'natural' and 'polished' only when they are true.
Customers say crystals have a soul, and shipping them proves they also have a weight.
